The lecture is organised by the Kulturni Front Association as part of its programme "Opatija Coffeehouse Debates" to popularise science and democratic deliberative Opatija Coffeehouse Debatesin cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and Amadria park hotels.
At a time when liberal values are increasingly under attack and populist and far-right politics are increasingly supported across the US, Europe and the world, citizens face profound moral and political issues: How to respond to the rise of the far right? Should we even engage in dialogue with those who support such political movements? If yes, under what conditions and for what purpose? These key issues of contemporary democracy will be addressed by Dr Alasia Nuti, Professor of Political Theory at the University of York, in her lecture “Citizens’ Responsibility in the Face of The Rise of the Far-Right”.
Nuti is an internationally recognized expert in the field of political theory with a special focus on normative analyses of historical and structural injustice. Her research links philosophical reflection with current political challenges, and in this lecture she will present an innovative theoretical framework on how democratically oriented citizens can – and should – act in the context of strengthening authoritarian and illiberal political forces and movements. In particular, it will address the question of when dialogue makes sense, when it can be counterproductive, and what forms of civic resistance democratic theory can justify. In addition, the lecture will be commented and an introduction to the discussion will be provided by Dr. Megan Foster from the University of LUISS in Rome and Prof. Dr. Elvio Baccarini from the University of Rijeka.
The lecture is intended for the general public, students, the academic community and all those who are concerned about the growing polarization and erosion of democratic norms. Entry is free. The lecture will be in English.
This lecture takes place as part of the project Opatija Coffeehouse Debates.
