It will be held in Tuesday 27 November u Café Continental (Abbey) Beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Artificial intelligence is a topic that has been occupying the thoughts of many writers and visionaries for decades, and with the advancement of technology and science, it comes out of the field of science fiction and becomes a thing of (very soon) everyday life. From smartphones and various services on the Internet to specialized programs in specific branches of industry, artificial intelligence already exists around us, and its accelerated development is increasingly difficult to follow and expertiseThe acquaintances who deal with it. While some, such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk and renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, warn of the great dangers of further development of artificial intelligence, a little more optimism is brought into the discussion by Bill Gates, who, contrary to his earlier skepticism, still believes that the development of artificial intelligence will lead to more good than bad consequences. All these experts, however, agree that these are potentially dangerous technologies whose development must take place in extremely controlled conditions, and they also express concern about the application of these technologies and the implications they will have on our socio-economic environment. The application of artificial intelligence will significantly change industrial production processes, but also public services (education and education, health system, public transport), as well as cause major changes in the demand in the labor market. Given that the first robot was recently granted civil rights (android Sophie in Saudi Arabia), the issue of the development of artificial intelligence certainly raises numerous political and moral dilemmas. This is an extremely complex topic that will become increasingly topical in the coming years.

In order to cover this topic as well as possible, without neglecting the technical-scientific (what is artificial intelligence in general and how it works) or the socio-philosophical approach (what are the potential applications and what risks it brings) we bring new experts to Opatija. Our first panelist, dr.sc. Dražen Brščić, Assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka, PhD in this subject at the University of Tokyo, and for several years he worked as a researcher at prestigious technical universities and institutes such as Technische Universität München and Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), Kyoto. She is engaged in mobile robotics, with a special emphasis on the interaction between robots and humans and the development of artificial intelligence, and as part of the panel discussion she will tell us a little more about what artificial intelligence is, how robots learn and overlook, and what are the (short-term and long-term) applications of these technologies in industry, but also in everyday life. The second panellist, Tomislav Miletić, PhD student at the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, and researched topics related to the expansion of human cognitive abilities by artificial tools and technologies (‘extended mind’) at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. It deals with the implications of AI development, especially in the domain of upbringing and education, i.e. moral learning (how AI can teach about morality, but also how AI can teach us and help us with moral decision-making).

Organizers from the Association for the Development of Youth Culture “Cultural Front”, the Millennium of the Hotel and the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka invite everyone interested to join them in this year's last panel discussion, and spend an early autumn evening with coffee, tea or mulled wine in a pleasant and intellectually stimulating atmosphere.

This year's panel discussion cycle as part of the Opatija Coffeehouse Debates project ends with a discussion on artificial intelligence, a topic whose topicality and relevance, in the midst of rapid technological development, is constantly growing.
