The premises of the Association Kulturni front This Friday, June 7, starting at 7 pm, will host another lecture by young scientists from Opatija and its surroundings, as the last event before the summer break. Julija Perhat, PhD student of philosophy at the Department of Philosophy in Rijeka and a member of the Centre for Language Research, will tell us more about the limits of freedom of speech and the problem of hate speech. In her research work, Perhat deals with the philosophy of language, ethics and politics, and she has exhibited on these topics at numerous international conferences. Hate speech (that is, the question of the limits of freedom of speech) is always a topical topic that causes numerous controversies, and the different legal status of hate speech in different countries contributes to this. Our right to freedom of expression can often be exemplified as causing pain or harm to others, which is affected by the content of our speech. But how then to strike a balance between striving for as much freedom of expression as possible and striving for as little tolerance as possible to harm others? In this lecture, Perhat will look at this different status of hate speech, with a special emphasis on certain language expressions (pejoratives) that aim to degrade the person(s) to whom they are addressed.
