Iva Martinić, PhD student from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, will talk about the morality of keeping pets.
The aim of the presentation is to open one of those questions that we rarely ask ourselves, and we should: Is it morally acceptable to keep animals as pets? Three strong objections to this practice will be explored, but also considered – which animals are even capable of living with us in a way that also brings real benefits to them? The philosophical debate brings together the ideas of three contemporary authors – Hilary Bok, Christine Korsgaard and Jessica Du Toit – to find answers to the questions of what we owe to the animals with whom we share our home, where our responsibilities lie and what a fairer future for human-animal coexistence might look like.
Iva Martinić is a Master of Education in Philosophy and Croatian Language and Literature, currently employed as a doctoral student/assistant on the HRZZ project within the project Career Development of Young Researchers - Training New Doctoral Students (label: DOK-2021-02-2742) and on the project Public Justification and Pluralism of Capabilities (label: HRZZ-IP-2020-02-8073).
