Nutrition and Pseudoscience – 17. Opatija Coffeehouse Debates

After a three-month summer break the project Opatija Coffeehouse Debates continues with another panel discussion in Café Continenetal to be held on Wednesday, 18 October starting at 7 p.m..

The theme of this 17th panel discussion is “Nutritionism and Pseudoscience”. Rarely will anyone dispute the importance of nutrition for maintaining health and ensuring the quality functioning of the human body. Likewise, few will dispute that certain forms of diet help, to a certain extent, with some diseases or disorders that people encounter. However, there are more and more cases where overemphasizes the positive effect of a food or diet on health, which sometimes leads to a complete abandonment of classical medicine and turning unproven and unverified alternative treatments.

Our panelists will address the issue of scientific status and scientific achievements of nutrition, but also the problem of media noise caused by the publication of numerous, often incompatible news about healthy nutrition.

Our first panellist will be Bojan Stojnić, Master of Nutrition, who graduated from the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, and is currently doing research as part of his PhD in Nutrigenomics and Personalized Preherana at the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain. Stojnić also performed the duties of the president of the association ‘Croatian Association of Nutritionists’, the first association of nutritionists in Croatia, and for years has been working on the popularization of nutrition by visiting various shows and public events , and is the author multiple articles on various food portals.

Our second panelist is a physicist and a well-known science journalist Nenad Jarić Dauenhauer which for Index.hr He writes about all branches of science, and he also worked as Scientific Editor at Tportal. His involvement in the promotion of science was recognized at the international level, when he was one of the candidates for the award in 2016. ‘European Scientific Journalist of the Year’ awarded by the European Association of Scientific Journalists (EUSJA) and the British Association of Scientific Writers (ABSW). He is the author of numerous articles, columns and interviews on several domestic and foreign portals, among which stand out Tportal i Index.hr.

Organizers from the Association “Cultural Front”the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka i Milenij hotel d.d. Opatija invites all interested to join us and, with coffee, tea or mulled wine, mark the beginning of autumn, as well as the beginning of new interesting panel discussions in Café Continental.
